After a phase of playing live in and around Leeds, including some now legendary post punk venues and recording ‘demos’, The Institute were offered the opportunity to record and release  the EP entitled ‘Beyond The Western Hills” on the Leeds based independent record label ‘City of Panic’. This EP was recorded in an eight track recording studio located in the city centre of Leeds. For the purposes of this EP, The Institute decided to continue with their research into how to be a ‘live’ post punk band. The approach to recording was simple as the eight available audio tracks were allocated to drums, bass and synthesiser. There was little recourse to audio effects such as delay or reverb. The Institute were initially pleased with the outcome of these recordings as they seemed to move The Institute’s sound from a rehearsal/live environment as featured on Disc 1 to a more professional studio based sound. However and on reflection at a later meeting, The Institute questioned whether the group format might be too restrictive. It was decided that their research interests should be modified to consider the application and use of the music making machines available at the time including the recently acquired drum machine. The EP ‘Beyond The Western Hills’ is presented here as Disc 3.
